About the Role - Based in Christchurch
We are looking for a skilled Traffic Signal Electrician to join our team to install, maintain and repair traffic signal systems and associated roadside electrical equipment. The successful applicant will support the safe and reliable operation of traffic signals across the region, working closely with engineers, contractors and traffic management personnel to deliver high-quality outcomes for road users and communities.
Key Responsibilities
Install, test, troubleshoot and commission traffic signal controllers, cabinets, detectors, vehicle loop systems, signal heads, cabling and ancillary equipment in accordance with specifications and drawings.
Carry out planned maintenance, routine inspections and fault-finding on traffic signal infrastructure to ensure systems remain operational and compliant with relevant standards.
Respond to emergency call-outs and service requests, providing timely repairs and temporary traffic control measures where required.
Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and control logic; perform testing with appropriate instruments and record results accurately.
Coordinate with project managers, traffic management teams and external contractors to schedule works and minimise disruption to road users.
Operate and maintain tools, test equipment and company vehicles safely; complete pre-start checks and report defects promptly.
Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental procedures, including working around live traffic, confined spaces and at height where applicable.
Maintain accurate site records, service logs, as-built documentation and handover paperwork; report hazards, incidents and near misses immediately.
Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced team members and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Skills & Experience – What You’ll Bring
New Zealand recognised certificate in electrical engineering - electrician for registration. With a current electrician's practising license.
Proven experience installing and maintaining traffic signal systems, street lighting or similar roadside electrical infrastructure.
An ability to work away from home at times would be beneficial.
Effective communication and teamwork skills with the ability to liaise with clients, contractors and stakeholders professionally.
Physically fit and able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
